PHILADELPHIA CLOSED HEAD INJURY LAWYERS

PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS

Closed head injury refers to an injury from a hard blow to the head from striking an object.

Closed head injuries can cause bruising of the brain, or brain contusions.  Closed head injuries are also responsible for concussions, which are brain damage injuries.   Such injuries can happen in car or truck accidents, falls, work accidents, or as the result of an assualt or a sports injury.

Some head injuries may cause irreversible brain damage, such as when the injury causes bleeding inside the brain or when the force of the injury itself damages the brain on impact.  Signs to look for in these cases include changes in personality, changes in emotions, altered mental abilities, memory loss or memory problems, problems with speech or language, alteration or reduction of sensation, hearing, taste, smell, or vision, onset of seizures, paralysis or even coma.

Accident cases involving closed head injuries are often hotly contested by insurance carriers or responsible parties.  Defense adjusters attempt to minimize or disregard closed head injuries where the injury cannot be proven definatively by diagnostic studies.  They sometimes seem to think that if your head has not completely caved in, damage to your brain from a head injury just shouldn't count.

You need a lawyer who understands that these cases are sometimes difficult to prove and who will put in the legwork necessary to pin down all available and appropriate helpful medical evidence supporting your claim.   You need a lawyer who will present that evidence in such a way that you will get the settlement or award you deserve for the injury and loss you have suffered.

Timothy Kennedy is a Philadelphia closed head injury lawyer who understands that not all closed head injuries show up as skull fracutres on x-rays.  More commonly, damage is caused when the brain is slammed against the inside of the cranium at the instant of a trauma, without fracture to the bones of the skull but with the force instead inflicted upon the brain and causing damage to the tissues of the brain.  At other times, bleeding on the brain from a trauma may be difficult to identify on available diagnostic studies, but may leave its halmarks in the form of post-concussion syndrome or long term brain injury.

Mr. Kennedy also recognizes that just because an injury qualifies under the medical term of "mild traumatic brain injury" (based on the length of time one may have been unconsicous at the scene, if at all, etc.) does not mean that the effects of that brain injury are mild.  Even subtle traumatic brain injuries may cause provable deficits on neuropyschological testing, for example.  Or the injury may cause frustrating lapses for the individual in daily life, and these will also often show up as problems in cognitive functioning on certain formal tests.  This may be true even where the damage from the closed head injury fails to appear as obvious on strictly visual studies such as an MRI or CT Scan studies of the brain.
